Just got back from Bowl Expo.
Lots of proprietors; lots of new “game, arcade, virtual reality” exhibitors on the trade show floor. Probably numbered 30 to 50 new booths I have never seen before and this is my 37th show so haven’t missed much
What was also surprising was the HIGH level of interest that many proprietors showed for changing their business model, for adding new venues into their “box” and the willingness to explore these options. I’m proud to say that many of my fellow proprietors, entrepreneurs to their core, are willing to reinvent themselves and not stick with a model that is no longer serving them as well as it once did. Good for them!!
Yet sometimes, even with our energy and courage and drive to change our physical model, we are still using outdated marketing and advertising approaches that no longer serve us well.
Some of us don’t think about being invisible. It’s been so long that we were visible that we forgot what to do. And then digital media came along and social media marketing and we blasted our little email hearts out; some of us still do…because we think it is FREE.
Now we are no longer invisible, but we are alienating people with messages that are not relevant to them. Have you checked how many people have “opted out” of your emails?
Traditional advertising and PR’s obituary is constantly written and re-written, but…we’re so scared of being invisible that we continue to use marketing tactics that do nothing to help grow our businesses. What’s worse than being invisible is alienating people.
The best marketing leads with the customer’s story. Every one of us has the opportunity to do that and to practice empathy.
