Without Strategy, Your Tactics Are a Guessing Game

Because  we’re bowling proprietors and have to manage 3, 4 or 5 or more profit centers, hire, train and manage people, oversee the operation, the cash controls, the maintenance, order supplies and food and beverage (sometimes we have an F&B manager so that tales a little weight off of us), but mostly, from the time we come into the center to the time we leave we are dealing with day to day management issues, which leaves us little time for “siting and staring time” to develop a “real strategy.”

Instead, with little time, we run to the tactics such as: get a better Facebook page, do our website over, send another email, promote another program, change the menu, hire  a new person, go to the bank, check on vendor invoices, etc.…it’s kind of like getting into a tactical groove of chasing your tail looking for the proverbial magic bullet.

But if you keep doing these tactics, hour after hour, day after day… you’re really just creating confusion and, candidly, a bit of a mess.

This mode of chasing tactics is just being busy, not being effective.

So here’s the question that is more difficult for all of us to answer then the mere words, “What’s your plan?”

What will you build first and how will you build upon that so your messages, your brand, your business is viewed consistently and appreciatively. What assets can you leverage to build your business?

You see, business plans, long term strategy, program development and communications are THE KEYS that build the highway to your goal.  The tactics are merely the stops along the SAME highway that reinforce the strategy.

More importantly, have you looked at the tactics you are implementing?  Do you really know if they are working?  Did you set any longer term goals other than the short term immediacy of your results?

Think strategy first and tactics second.  Any other way is just throwing darts at a board

You might win sometimes, but more often than not, meh!
