Is It Always About Promoting and Pitching?

The other day I listened to a two hour marketing pod cast where the speaker advised us all to “Forget Marketing.”

Forget marketing??  

Was she crazy?? 

It would be like forgetting how to breathe!!  

As I listened to her, I realized that she was making the same point I have been making for some time. She just said it with a little more “oomph” aimed at my solar plexus and was bringing me back to story time…one of, if not, the most effective and honest ways to communicate what you are doing and why you are doing it.  

Because what she was saying was I didn’t have to necessarily go thru the whole marketing process again and again, but rather, because of our experience level, we could just sit down and start writing. “Ok, I’m in”, I said.  “I love to write.”

Start, she said with “why you are doing what you are doing and what you are trying to build.”

Then write down how you got to this point in your journey and what you learned along the way.  And, oh yes, did what you learn along the way equip you well enough to help your customers get what they want?

Hopefully it did.

And finally she suggested that we, “as marketers, show them how their lives will be better because of what we created.”

Marketing doesn’t have to be about promoting and pitching. Marketing can be an honest conversation between two people (or groups of people), who need each other.
