The Art of Procrastination

Stack of documents on the desk and pensive male employee working on backgroundEven though it was a short week, I was able to work with two clients about finalizing their Cycle 1 marketing plans; that’s the period from September 1 thru December 31, 2017.

One client, a relative newbie said to me, “I can’t believe it. I’ve been doing this for 16 years and this is the first time I am so far ahead. I even have my holiday marketing program and New Year’s Eve program done. Why didn’t I do this before?”
I smiled at him and just said, “People tend to procrastinate and find reasons not to do the tough stuff. You decided to change that, because you realized that what you were doing was just not as effective or efficient. I’m happy for you.”
As the video call ended, I thought about what he had said and had a sudden surge of melancholy. “How many proprietors are out there, feeling the same way, doing it the same way and just getting by; or counting on rain or light snow as their best marketing strategy?” I thought.
So I gave it some thought and focused on “procrastination.” After doing some research I discovered that while most of us want to get the job done in a timely fashion. However, physiologically we are inherently wired to seek instant gratification which then gets in the way of doing the hard stuff…so we put it off until a deadline arises and our “panic angel” rises us up out of our slumber and we work hard…starting one week before New Year’s eve.
It’s really too late, yet we do just OK. Not as good as we should or could have if we really planned it out, but just OK.
And when the New Year stars, we make a resolution not to put this kind of thing off again. But other holidays come around like Presidents Day and MLK Day and we find ourselves doing the same thing…putting it off, again, again and again.
Why?
Well, the main reason this happens is because we all need accountability and as an entrepreneur or a single owner, your accountability is what you think it is. Maybe it’s to your family, your banker, your employees, your customers. Or maybe it’s just you. If the latter is the case, then perhaps you need a mentor, or a marketing coach/consultant to assist you (and your business) to not procrastinate your marketing and helping you to get ahead of the curve.
We have helped hundreds of proprietors get and stay ahead of the curve. Maybe before the new season rolls around we can help you as well.
Let us demonstrate how you can take advantage of our rock solid; battle tested marketing system – which I personally guarantee will provide you with great flexibility – will always keep you ahead of the curve…and eliminate your marketing stress.
