I Know I Have Not Posted In A While

I know I have not posted in a while, probably about 10 days. I was gladdened that I received so many calls from my dear readers asking if I was OK. Thank you for your concern.

“Life is what happens to us while we are busy making plans.” I think John Lennon said that or something similar. And recently life got in the way. But onwards and upwards!

I have been traveling, with a host of stops across the country, the last one being in Iowa at the IABPA summer convention.

It was great to reacquaint with some old friends and make new ones, but most of all I liked the fact that these folks owned relatively smaller centers, many fewer than 16, some 12, or 8 or even 6 lanes. Their challenges are unique and they have to be extra agile to cover chief, cook and bottle washer. What a wealth of knowledge they have in running a small center and their stories were just wonderfully Americana in style and breadth!

But they have an advantage over you big guys.

They really are a part of their community. They don’t have to try; they literally know, on a first name basis, probably everyone in their town. I think we can all learn a lesson from these smaller centers in this regard.

And that’s what my keynote speech was about – to become so ingrained in your community that their customers just won’t become repeat customers, but will become loyal customers and won’t even think about going anywhere else because they readily identify with your center.

So I ask all of you; “how can you create loyal customers?” And the answer isn’t as simple as saying “great customer service, clean and neat facilities, fair prices, happy people and a host of things to do.”

No, my friends, the answer is more complicated. But I’ll give you a clue: “Start with WHY you are in business?” And the answer is NOT to make money.

That’s the result of your WHY?

Please let me know what your answers are and I will publish them
